|She responded by asking if I knew golf. Truthfully I am not knowledgeable about golf, but I said I knew a bit. It was then that it hit me that this was Montse. Switching to English, I asked her what her handicap was. It is between 10 and 12. She also told me she had turned 14 years old that week.
Most of us have seen Montse on the driving range on the weekend being instructed by Andres or hitting balls with her Dad. It turns out she started golfing with her Dad when she was 5 years old in the Chapala area. For the past 3 years she has been sponsored by our Club. That means we allow her access to the driving range and the golf course at no charge.
Montse plays in several tournaments a year. National tournaments like Copa Zona Centro in Queretaro ,Copa Tijuana, Nacional Interzonas, Copa Mazatlan , and many more. She also has played in International tournaments representing Mexico. She played in the Callaway Championship in San Diego and US Kids in Pine Hurst in North Carolina. She won several of national and local tournaments last year . She was the best player in her category in Jalisco for the last six years !
Montse is charming and easy to talk to since her English is very good. She has cousins in Southern California. She spent a month with them this summer and got to practice her English daily. She also got to play most of the courses in the area around Alhambra where she was staying.
Montse sees herself as going to college in the US and being involved with collegiate golf. She is a talented young lady who is determined to make golf an important part of her future. I think we are fortunate to be able to sponsor her.
KIDS AND THEIR FUTURE OUTREACH PROGRAM
KIDS AND THEIR FUTURE, the educational outreach program supported by the Country Club members, has existed since 2001. Its succinct mission statement defines the goal and parameters of the program:
THE KIDS AND THEIR FUTURE FUND EXISTS TO HELP THE EMPLOYEES OF THE COUNTRY CLUB DE CHAPALA PAY FOR THEIR CHILDRENíS EDUCATIONAL EXPENSES.
Those educational expenses include tuition, materials and supplies, and testing. The fund also pays for a part of transportation costs for those students attending school outside of their communities. Support is provided from kinder through university level. Attendance and academic achievement are monitored; parents are reimbursed upon presenting receipts and school records. The average number of students in the program is 45 each academic year.
KIDS AND THEIR FUTURE not only supports students on traditional educational trajectories but also pays for those in technical programs and training for other careers.
The fund is sustained by two sources, a voluntary contribution from members as a part of their monthly membership payment and by revenue generated by the Amigo Cup, an annual intra-club fund raising golf tournament.
The KIDS AND THEIR FUTURE Committee is proud of the programís success. Our students stay in school and many have completed university degrees. Our recent graduates include accountants, teachers, computer technicians, a veterinarian, a tourism official, a chef, and an airline employee.
